- A domestic violence shelter is a place where abused and battered individuals go to seek refuge from their abusers. The location of the shelter is kept confidential in order to keep your abuser from finding you.
History
Our domestic violence shelter has room for both men, women, and their children. The shelter will provide for all your basic needs, including food and personal care items. The length of time you can stay at the shelter is limited and temporary, but we will also help you find a permanent home, job, and other things you need to start a new life. The shelter will also be able to refer you to other services for abused and battered women in your community, including:
- Legal help
- Counseling
- Support groups
- Services for your children
- Employment programs
- Health-related services
- Educational opportunities
- Financial assistance
General Shelter Information
- To utilize the shelter, clients MUST be in immediate danger due to domestic violence, sexual assault, or elder abuse.
- The Reach shelter is located in a confidential location with a security system and staff on hand 24 hours a day/7 days a week.
- The location is convenient to most locations in Cherokee County.
- Shelter clients will be provided case management and advocacy.
- Food, personal care items, and clothing will be provided as needed.
Criteria for Admission to Reach Shelter Program
- 18 years or older or emancipated from parents/guardians.
- Can be with or without children.
- Be a victim of domestic violence, a victim of sexual assault, or rape (regardless of relationship to offender), or a victim of elder abuse within the last 90 days.
- Be in immediate danger and forced to leave home due to a violent situation within the last 90 days.
- Be willing to participate in the shelter program and adhere to all rules and regulations outlined in the in shelter agreement.
- Notify the shelter manager of any active, communicable disease that one or one’s family member might possess so that staff may address any special concerns and considerations.
Unqualified for Shelter
- Possessing an illegal drug substance or alcohol at the shelter.
- Being 18-years or younger and unaccompanied by a parent or guardian.
- Unwilling to participate in the shelter program (including adhering to rules and regulations as outlined in the shelter agreement).
- Possessing a medical or mental condition requiring care that is beyond the capabilities of our facility and/or staff.
